Any hope for Europe?

My article Any hope for Europe? has now been published by New Europe (Our World In 2012).

  1. Great article. I'm worried that the way we're going about integration is self-defeating: the longer this failed model of summitry continues, the less faith in European solutions people will have. Add that to a poor debate when it comes to confronting the practical questions of further union, and it doesn't bode well for the future...

  2. Thank you for the compliment. Even if we live in democratic countries and a real, democratic Europe would only mean adding one level of democratic government (for the issues best suited in the global era), mentally it seems to be as difficult as it was pre the American and French revolutions for the then sovereigns (monarchs) to fathom as it is today for the members of the European Council.

I share your pessimism with regard to the alienating effect of European integration of the kind we see. When we add the glaring inadequacy of the solutions cooked up in the present setting, it is like seeing the divided Greek city states ceding place to the new Romes of our world.
